Geotechnical and Structural Instrumentation | Monitoring Solutions

Mining Geotechnical Instrumentation and monitoring systems for mining are designed according to the operations that need to be monitored: shafts, stopes, underground galleries tunneling, open-pit excavation, tailings storing facilities, paste backfilling, etc. It serves not only as a means of monitoring the safety of the mining process but also as a way to optimize the extraction processes and mine design. Tailings Storage Facility Geotechnical monitoring systems for tailings storage facility (TSF) networks are custom made for each project but share a few commonalities. Instrumentation systems often include traditional geotechnical sensors such as piezometers and inclinometers to monitor the performance of the dams and tailings ponds, as well as a variety of environmental instruments such as water content, pH. Oxygen dissolved etc., for assessing chemical stability of the residues (tailings) and mining by-products (wastes) generated during ore extraction and subsequent purification processes.

Infrastructure The purpose of geotechnical instrumentation for infrastructure construction is generally to follow consolidation rates and pore pressure during cut-and-fill operations, soil subsidence and convergence during tunneling, load transfer on support, struts, tiebacks and stresses and tilting of adjacent structures and utilities. Geotechnical monitoring systems are tailored for each project: pile testing, deep excavations, road embankment, tunneling, etc. They can also be used to monitor existing structure to facilitate long-term maintenance by monitoring vibration, tilt, strains, etc.

Structural Health Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems are deployed to analyze the performance of a structure over the life of the structure. In so doing, actual performance can be compared with predicted performance model and, in the event of any unforeseen (dangerous) conditions, allow remedial measures to be taken in a timely manner. Dams As every dam has an inherent potential for failure, dam performance monitoring plays a major role in preventing public safety, validate the design and understanding its behavior over its entire life in service. Instrumentation systems for dams are designed according to the type of dam to be monitored: concrete gravity, earthfill, rockfill, arch or rock-compacted concrete. Monitoring is often automated with custom data acquisition systems, reading instruments at set intervals during the construction, impoundment and operation phases.

Noise and vibration With the tightening of compliance requirements and aging buildings and infrastructures, construction work such as blasting, trench excavation, tunnel digging, pile driving or drilling can generate large amounts of noise and vibration which must be controlled to protect public, workers, sensitive equipment, and infrastructure from excessive vibration and noise levels. Remote Data Management Remote data management systems (RDMS) is the keystone of modern geotechnical and structural health monitoring systems. RDMS are infinitely flexible and can be tailored to accommodate instruments from all manufacturers, a variety of loggers and many different cloud tools. A typical system will connect an instrument to a data logger. The logger is connected to the internet with an edge device such as a cellular modem or satellite through which the data is sent to cloud platforms.
