Mandated by Construction Interlag, GKM Consultants has monitored underwater noise during the demolition work as part of the resurfacing of the caissons of the Gros Cacouna dock. The protection of marine mammals, for which the beluga whale has become a major environmental issue. Marine mammals have a much wider range of audibility frequencies than humans. Using a state-of-the-art hydrophone, covering a frequency range of up to 200 KHz, the noise generated by the work, carried out dry in a cofferdam, could be compared to the noise limit set by the government. The installation of an air bubble curtain reduced the noise footprint of the yard at the harbour exit, thus reducing the noise impact on the underwater environment of the Belugas.
